Navigating Immigration Policy in Higher Education: Strategies for Supporting Immigrant and International Communities

Abstract:
The United States thrives by attracting, educating, and retaining talent from around our country and around the world. Immigrant-origin and international students, faculty, and staff are vital contributors to higher education’s mission to build America's national talent pipeline. They support enrollment, teaching and research on campuses, fuel innovation and entrepreneurship, drive local and national economic growth, and strengthen our workforce. However, rapidly changing immigration policies have presented escalating challenges for higher education institutions and their communities. This talk will explore the complex intersection of immigration and higher education, analyzing the latest policy and legal actions affecting institutions, immigrant, international, and refugee students, graduates, and noncitizen employees; and sharing institutional strategies for navigating immigration policies and actions; practical approaches for supporting impacted students and employees; and opportunities for collective action to preserve and defend access and opportunity.
Bio:
DR. MIRIAM FELDBLUM is co-founder, president and CEO of the nonpartisan, nonprofit Presidents’ Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration, an alliance of close to 600 public and private colleges and universities that have come together to address the immigration issues impacting higher education. A national expert on the intersection of immigration and higher education, Miriam has written extensively on immigrant, international, and refugee students, immigration policy, and the future of higher education. Miriam has served in leadership and faculty positions at Pomona College, California Institute of Technology, and the University of San Francisco. She received a BA in political science from Barnard College, and MA, MPhil, and Ph.D. degrees in political science from Yale University. She is on the Board of TheDream.US, a Public Member of the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC), and a non-resident fellow at the Migration Policy Institute.
