Newark College of Engineering

School History

Although the school would not adopt the name of Newark College of Engineering until 1930, NCE began offering undergraduate degree programs in chemical, mechanical and electrical engineering in 1919. Civil engineering was added in 1927. The early degree programs incorporated real-world experience through cooperative education at area companies.  From its earliest days,  NCE established itself as a "school of opportunity," with students who were often the first in their families to attend college. The co-op format allowed many students to "work their way through" and continue their  studies even throughout the Great Depression.

World War II and NCE

Throughout World War II, NCE helped educate students for the war effort. Degree programs were accelerated to fill the military's need for more engineers. Some students switched to night school and went to work in defense plants and military research programs. NCE also served as a technology training site for soldiers. Although class sizes waned in the latter years of the war, returning veterans swelled the enrollment again, with veterans comprising 75 percent of the freshman class in 1946.

After the war

NCE began to expand in both size and scope. The first master's degrees were awarded in 1949, the first doctoral degree in 1964. Eberhardt Hall was purchased in 1948, and Cullimore Hall opened in 1958. A major campus building program in 1962 added Faculty Hall, University Hall, the Specht Building, Tiernan Hall, and the Hazell Student Center.

NCE, then and today

NCE's 85 years of growth and development parallel an unprecedented period of scientific discovery and technological innovation. From its earliest days, NCE has adapted its curriculum to emerging technologies to prepare its students for an ever-changing marketplace. In recent decades, a strong focus on research and the construction of state-of-the-art research facilities have made NCE an active participant in technological advancement and the development of technology based enterprise.

Research concentrations include wireless technology, transportation, nanotechnology and microelectronics, engineered particulates, microflow control, membrane technologies, environmental engineering and polymer technology.

NCE’s students are our greatest asset. Our graduate and undergraduate students work side-by-side with faculty members in labs on key projects, and many students devise research projects of their own. Through internships and through NJIT’s co-op program – which gives students the opportunity to receive course credit at paid professional job placements during the academic year – undergraduates gain invaluable real-world work experience. After graduation, our students go on to successful careers as leaders and innovators, both in the world of engineering and in a diversity of other industries.

  • in undergraduate, graduate and continuing professional education, providing a diverse body of aspiring future engineering professionals and entrepreneurs and engineering leaders and educators with a learning environment that prepares them for lifelong careers, growth and personal achievement;
  • in the conduct of research for the creation of knowledge that lays the foundation for bringing about advances in engineering practices that improve the quality of life of the citizens of the state, the Nation and the global community;
  • in the service to the NJIT community, engineering profession and the society at large, supporting the various activities of NJIT as a public urban research university, transforming the state-of-the-art of knowledge into state-of-the-art of practice in industry and the engineering profession, and promoting environmentally sound technology for sustainable economical growth;
  • in contributing to the state’s economic development through partnerships and joint ventures with the business community and through the development of intellectual property in new engineering and technology methods, processes, or products.

Even before engineering was recognized as a separate discipline, humans started discussing, explaining, writing about and teaching engineering to each other. They did so in factories, workshops and even some schools, but for more than a millennium most new engineers were trained through on-the-job apprenticeships, not in classrooms and teaching laboratories. It was not until the Civil War that a clear need for systematic training in engineering was recognized in the United States, and not until the second half of the 19th century that a group of U.S. colleges and departments in academic institutions started to concentrate on engineering, borrowing initially from European models.

Newark College of Engineering (NCE), known originally as Newark Technical School, opened in February of 1885 as one of these new engineering institutions. Since its early beginnings, NCE adopted several basic principles that continue to guide us today. These principles include a strong emphasis on design as the ultimate objective of engineering education; extensive hands-on experience for students; a pragmatic, practical orientation; full exploitation of the newest and most scientifically advanced methods; and a commitment to engineering in the public service. Over time a strong research component was added as a major objective, and today NCE faculty and students conduct research and development in key areas of public need. These include transportation; automated manufacturing and robotics; computing and computer networks, including mobile computing; energy generation, storage and delivery; the design and manufacturing of medicines; medical imaging; medical instrumentation; nanotechnology; and a variety of challenges in navigation, control, and infrastructure design, maintainability and sustainability. Our teaching and research laboratories are advanced and vibrant places where individuals with a wide variety of backgrounds and interests work together on intellectual and practical pursuits. We are interested not only in advancing theory and the state-of-the-art in the areas of our study, but also in translating abstract ideas and theoretical principles into working systems and devices.  These are designed to contribute to the welfare, safety, longevity and comfort of humans, as well as to protect the environment and promote responsible use of natural resources.

Whether you are a high school student exploring engineering as a career path, an undergraduate student planning future graduate studies, an engineering professional seeking research collaboration opportunities, a member of the public seeking better understanding of technology, or a potential user of NCE’s R&D efforts, we are committed to providing you with the information you need to work with us and will do our best to address your technical and educational needs.

Please explore our webpages for more information about our faculty, areas of study, curricula and programs, and write to us at nce@njit.edu if you need more detailed or specific information. Our motto is: “If you can dream it, you can build it at NJIT.” Let us build it together.
