Independent Study for General Engineering B.S. Students:
GEN 491 is a 3-credit required course that offers an opportunity for senior level students in the General Engineering program to combine what they learned in the classroom with practical application. By working with an NJIT Professor students will be able to showcase mastery of engineering skill sets and earn a letter grade based off of the agreed upon goals, checkpoints and expectations set by the professor and student.
Independent Study/Research Project Guidelines
Student must locate and secure an NJIT Full Time Professor (preferably within NCE) to work with
Professor and Student work together to establish criteria, checkpoints, project outcomes, etc
Professor agrees to monitor and grade student work
Subject matter should be Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics based (STEM)
Must send an email to miosotis.hernandez@njit.edu *MINIMALLY 7-days* before the last day to add/drop each semester, with the following information:
Student Name
Student ID# (8 digit)
Brief summary of research topic
Outline of research goals and checkpoints agreed upon
Full name of Professor
Professor email
Upon review of email/topic/professor it will either be accepted and processed OR denied and student will be notified of adjustments to be made.
GEN 491 is a course that should be taken in a student’s senior year of coursework and is intended to round out their education in STEM subjects. It is the responsibility of the student to connect with instructors at NJIT and establish the necessary elements for the independent study.
